White Nose Syndrome
[edit]Howes cave is a roosting site for colonies of both big brown bats and little brown bats. In 2006, photographs of little brown bats taken at Howes Cave presented the first recognized case of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease decimating North American bat populations [1]https://doi.org/10.1126/science.1163874. . Since 2006, white-nose syndrome has spread to cave roosting bats across the continent. Some hypotheses suggest that white nose syndrome was introduced by humans engaging in cave tourism.[2]https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0169534711001923#bib0050 192.246.234.251 (talk) 19:45, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
